Michael Shynes

I have started writing songs for my second album, and would like to be more transparent with the process this time around.  Generally my songs start as acoustic ideas before anything else is added.  In a way, these versions are my favorite because they feel more personal, and since you have been kind enough to take an interest in what I am doing, I would like to share some of these demos with you.

Here’s a Match, Light My Heart on Fire was actually written about an hour before a show in Minneapolis.  I was rehearsing some songs acoustically with Brian Moen, when he started playing an acoustic riff that felt right with my current state of mind. So I asked him to keep repeating it while I matched his chordwork and began writing lyrics.

The song is written about the feeling that comes from discovering something that is believed to be one of a kind.  Subsequently losing it, and enduring the long journey back toward trying to find it again.  I often have a fear that my best days have passed me by, or that I have lost some of life’s novelty through choices I’ve made.  But this song was about trying to summon the strength to fight one’s own “mental terrorism” from time to time.

Here are the Lyrics:

Don’t know from where I came
Just know how much I gave
These streets all look the same
Only the faces change
But that’s everything

And if the smoke does clear
I’d want it far from here
And if our hands wash clean
We’d coalesce in a dream

I’m giving up I’m giving up slowly
Here’s a match light my heart on fire
You’re my one and you were my only
First cast and my one desire
Oh, You’ve got to fight it, fight it
Oh, You’ve got to fight it, fight it

Open the hatch we’ll find some dry land
Lost in an ocean I just don’t understand
Why do you talk of far away plans
Involving me it makes me want to see your face again

I’m giving up I’m giving up slowly
Here’s a match light my heart on fire
You’re my one and you were my only
First cast and my one desire
Oh, You’ve got to fight it, fight it
Oh, You’ve got to fight it, fight it
